Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Mitcham
Gardeners Mitcham is committed to maintaining the highest practicable standards of health, safety and welfare for our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. This policy outlines our approach to managing risks associated with gardening, grounds maintenance and related services across our operating areas.
Policy Aims
The primary aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property, and to ensure that all work is carried out in a safe, controlled and environmentally responsible manner. We seek to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice in all aspects of our work.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Mitcham is responsible for implementing and reviewing this policy and for providing the leadership necessary to promote a positive safety culture. This includes planning work with safety as a core priority, allocating suitable resources for safety measures and training, and ensuring that staff understand their duties.
Managers will regularly review working practices, monitor the effectiveness of safety procedures and respond promptly to hazards, incidents and near misses. Where necessary, additional controls or revised procedures will be introduced to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Gardeners Mitcham shares responsibility for maintaining safe working conditions. Staff must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Employees are expected to cooperate fully with safety instructions, follow all procedures and use the equipment provided in the correct manner.
Team members must promptly report any hazards, defects in tools or machinery, unsafe conditions, accidents, injuries or near misses to their supervisor. No employee should undertake any task for which they have not been trained or that they consider unsafe without first seeking guidance from management.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting any job, Gardeners Mitcham will assess the risks associated with the planned work, including the site conditions, access arrangements, tools and machinery to be used and any specific client requirements. Where necessary, site-specific risk assessments and method statements will be prepared and communicated to all personnel involved.
Safe systems of work will be adopted for activities such as hedge cutting, lawn mowing, tree work within our competence, use of ladders, working near roads, handling green waste and using power tools. Staff must follow these systems at all times and must not improvise or bypass safety measures.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Personal Protective Equipment
All gardening tools, machinery and equipment used by Gardeners Mitcham will be maintained in a safe and serviceable condition. Pre-use checks must be carried out by operators, and any faults or damage must be reported and rectified before equipment is used again.
Appropriate personal protective equipment, such as safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection where needed, will be provided and must be worn as instructed. Employees are responsible for looking after their issued protective equipment and reporting loss or damage without delay.
Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers or other chemicals are used as part of our gardening services, Gardeners Mitcham will ensure that only suitable and approved products are selected and that they are stored, transported, mixed and applied safely.
Relevant product information will be followed, and control of substances hazardous to health will be managed through appropriate assessments, training, labelling and use of protective equipment. We will always aim to minimise chemical use and explore safer alternatives where practicable.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Manual handling tasks, such as lifting bags of soil, moving paving materials or handling machinery, present a significant risk of strain and injury. Gardeners Mitcham will assess manual handling operations and adopt techniques and equipment to reduce the need for heavy lifting whenever possible.
Employees will receive guidance on safe lifting practices, correct posture and the use of mechanical aids, wheelbarrows and team lifting. No individual should attempt to lift or carry loads that are beyond their capability.
Working Outdoors and Environmental Conditions
Gardening work is often carried out in varying weather and ground conditions. Gardeners Mitcham will consider factors such as heat, cold, wet weather, reduced visibility and uneven terrain when planning work.
Staff are encouraged to wear suitable clothing, take regular breaks, stay hydrated and adapt working methods to prevailing conditions. Work may be postponed or modified if conditions present an unacceptable risk, such as high winds during tree-related tasks or extreme heat.
Public and Client Safety
Many of our tasks are carried out in residential gardens, communal grounds and other areas where members of the public may be present. Gardeners Mitcham will take care to protect clients, neighbours, passers-by and visitors from harm.
This may include cordoning off work areas, using warning signs, controlling access, managing vehicle movements, and scheduling higher-risk activities at quieter times. Tools and materials will be stored securely to prevent unauthorised access, especially by children.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Mitcham will provide appropriate training so that employees are competent to carry out their duties safely. This includes induction training, instruction in the use of machinery and chemicals, and ongoing refresher training where required.
Less experienced staff will be supervised by competent personnel until they can safely work independently. Only trained and authorised individuals will operate specialist machinery.
Accidents, Incidents and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, injuries, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported to management as soon as possible. Gardeners Mitcham will investigate these events to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
We are committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance. This policy will be reviewed periodically, and whenever there are significant changes in our activities, to ensure that it remains relevant, effective and aligned with current legislation and best practice.
